Fair Trade Day double bill at The Phoenix

8th May 2009, 10:01am

To mark and celebrate World Fair Trade Day (9 May), East Finchley’s The Phoenix cinema is showing two films on Sunday that tackle and study the impact of globalisation. During the day, as well as the double bill, The Phoenix will be selling fair trade products from a stall in the theatre.

The first film, Bamako sees the trial of the IMF and the World Bank, the plaintiff is Africa. The film shows how Africa’s ongoing problems are inextricably tied to its relationships both past and present with the rest of the world. Life and Debt is the second film of the double bill, and examines the sad state of Jamaica's economy in the face of ‘free trade’ and globalisation. Much of the film’s narration is excerpts taken from Jamaica Kincaid’s novel, A Small Place.
